So, I made a pledge for 2024– to read more books that are popular, that come recommended, that support local and/or self-published authors, books from booktok and well, books I don’t expect to like.
But, as of right now, we are a small independent book publishing company that does not make enough money yet to pay its staff, bonuses and payments come as we can provide them.
We managed in 2023 to lose only $500 if we include every cup of coffee, tank of gas, ream of paper and book purchased. For a business of a little more than two years that is publishing books 18, 19 & 20 in the next 30 days (and possibly 21 & 22 by summer if all goes well), I find them satisfactory.
As a member of this book publishing and writing community, I want to buy all the books. I haven’t purchased books in probably a decade and I gave most of my precious volumes away. This Parisian Phoenix Publishing endeavor has awakened parts of me perhaps best left dormant.
I made several pledges:
- I will never walk into an independent bookstore without purchasing something.
- I will, whenever possible, purchase the books of authors who are nice to me. Or that have been recommended to me for some reason or another.
- If someone buys my book (the ones I write, not every book I publish), I will buy there.
- I will review every book I read, at the minimum on Goodreads but also on Goodreads, TikTok and this blog as I am able.
- I will trade with authors who don’t have the money to buy my book and we can trade reviews. And I will never post less than a three star review without talking to the author first.

With that in mind, and sections in Barnes & Noble these days like “Witchy Romance” and “On Booktok,” how I am to decide what and how much to buy?
** If you are an author and you wish to discuss any of my pledges and goals, please contact me. All authors need to support one another– there are plenty of readers to go around.
