New Year. Plotting goals. Absorbing information and moving forward.
I have proclaimed 2025 “THE YEAR OF THE SANDWICH.” Maybe I’m just hungry. But as I discussed in my goal setting for writers workshop this week, a sandwich offers a pretty good mental image of individual goal setting. We choose the ingredients and the complexity according to our own needs and desires.
This week we held our first writers workshop of the year at the Easton Area Public Library where we discussed setting goals using various frameworks from SMART goals to goal sandwiches. These methods are all based on the same idea:

I love this concept of a goal sandwich.
The simple “peanut butter and jelly” version can be used when working with children or with a very basic goal. Each slice of bread represents a beginning and end, the peanut butter represents obstacles (sticky, get it?) and the jelly represents actions we need to take.
As a sandwich, or goal, becomes more complex, we have to make choices. We choose ingredients and proportions based on our taste. And all of our sandwich desires are individual.

As always, paid subscribers on my Substack have access to the whole slide deck in the bottom of this email and can always go back and review any of my workshop topics by using the “workshop topics” tab on the Parisian Phoenix Substack homepage.
One of my personal goals in 2025 is to resume weight training and increase my daily steps. I’ve already completed six pretty intense workouts (five under medical supervision and one with my favorite gym owner).
