There is no art without story

As a journalist, I know there is always a story. If two people are in a room, I used to tell my interns and new reporters, there is a story. If a meeting gets canceled, there’s a story why.

As humans, we cherish story. We may live in day-to-day routines but our entertainment, information sharing and legacies revolve around story. All art conveys story. A painting tells a story in color and strokes. A photo freezes a moment in time.

A poem preserves the emotions, beauty and pain within a story.

These are the reflections I had during last night’s EARTHWOVEN storytelling event organized by Patchwork Storytelling Guild with support from WDIY and, of course, Parisian Phoenix.

Oral storytelling predates written language. Oral storytelling serves as the original history book. Without story, we would be another animal surviving on instinct alone.

Bookstores collect and sell stories. Saturday was National Independent Bookstore Day. Your favorite independent bookstore probably had a special event. If you missed it, try to stop by as soon as you can and show your support. If you want to support independent bookstores but prefer to shop online, check out Bookshop.org. We have a little shop there.
