On Travel Writing

As my regular readers may know, and has been mentioned in this newsletter, I am in Dublin, Ireland today with my good friend and traveling companion, M.

My daughter brought me to D.C. last weekend so that M. and I can leave from his home on Wednesday night after I get done teaching my class at Northampton Community College.

My daughter and I treated the weekend as our very own weekend adventure, and if you wish to hear more about that silliness, here are the links to my personal blog/website/portfolio where you can expect daily updates.

  • Vacation Logs: Day One (Harrisburg, Pa., and Gaithersburg, Md.)
  • Vacation Logs: Day Two (Washington D.C./The Smithsonian National Zoo)

My daughter: “I forgot we had to stop every five minutes so you can write everything down.”

Tips for Junk Journaling:

  • Find pens you enjoy using in various colors.
  • Fill a pencil case or pouch with pens, tape, and a small pair of scissors for easy use on the go.
  • Buy a new journal that gives you vibes for the project. My Dublin book is green and has subtle dot pages, which makes it easy to write and draw without zigzagging everyone but doesn’t interfere with the visuals.
  • If you can find a journal with a pocket, that makes it easier to store items until you sit down.
  • It’s okay if it’s messy or not professional.
  • Leave blank pages where stuff goes. Or stuff the items between the pages where they go. (That’s when an elastic closure comes in handy.)
