Book Review: Season to Taste by Caroline J. Smith

I adored this book— while certainly not light, fluffy interludes about female-driven food memoirs, it still reads easily. The book has short, concise chapters in an organized format that summarizes Smith’s ideas without becoming cumbersome.

The book unfolds like a crisp aperitif, encouraging thought about feminism, gender roles, societal expectations and how these constructs and frameworks influence our relationship with food and the kitchen.

The notes and indexing in the back of the book are well-done and Smith presents a comprehensive bibliography that can lead the reader into more in-depth discussion of the topics at hand.

I read the book by dividing it into “one chapter per night” which allowed me to mull and enjoy the topic, especially since I am of an age that allows me to remember or at least recognize the pop culture and historical contexts key to the book.

And Smith’s writing style made it enjoyable to curl up in bed with “Season to Taste.”
