- I know Sarah J. Maas is having a moment these days, so I asked someone I know and trust to recommend one of her books, the one he thought I should read if I only read one. He recommended Throne of Glass. I purchased it from Jojo’s Book Nook and am 2/3 through. It’s good. Do I love it? No. Am I enjoying it? Yes. Am I rushing home to read it? Also no.I love the concept that magic was forbidden from a world. I love the idea of champions fighting for their freedom. What irks me is my typical world-building issues with fantasy.(1) Made-up names. I get pulled out of the story every time I have to struggle with a name. But names in real-life society are no longer as regimented so I guess I need to deal with that.(2) Where is this place? An alternate reality? A made-up world? Because culturally it sounds like the ancient Celts crossedwith an idealized medieval setting.
- Once I finish Throne of Glass, I am moving on to a memoir, Grappling with Ghosts, by James Harvey. He’s writing about life in Ireland. After my recent impromptu visit to the nation, and my hope to connect it to my academic research into religion and post-colonial relationships/stereotypes, I am very excited (and impatient) to start this. Mr. Harvey mailed me a print copy, and I look forward to more conversations with him.
